Sun Spots: A Guide to Preventing and Fading Them in a Mediterranean Climate

Living in Alanya is wonderful, but the sun is skin’s biggest ager. Why do sun spots form, how can you prevent them, and how does professional care fade them?

The sun is the best part of living on the Mediterranean coast — and the skin’s biggest ager. One of the concerns we hear most in Alanya is sun spots on the face, backs of the hands and décolleté. The good news: with the right habits and regular care they can be prevented and noticeably faded.

How do sun spots form?

When UV rays reach the skin, cells called melanocytes produce melanin to protect it. With repeated, unprotected exposure this production becomes irregular and pigment concentrates in some areas, creating brown, well-defined spots. Hormonal changes, certain medications and post-acne inflammation can speed this up.

Prevention: 4 daily habits

  1. Broad-spectrum SPF 50: on cloudy days and in winter too. Face and neck need about a teaspoon.
  2. Reapply every 2–3 hours: especially after the sea or pool.
  3. Physical protection: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and shade between 11:00 and 16:00.
  4. Antioxidant support: a morning vitamin C serum complements your sunscreen.

What to watch in home care

Brightening ingredients (vitamin C, niacinamide, azelaic acid, retinoids) help when used consistently, but the wrong combinations can sensitise skin and trigger new spots. Avoid using strong acids unsupervised in summer. The safest way to choose products is after a skin analysis.

Professional pigmentation care

We first image the spots with our pHformula skin analyser — it can even show “future spots” not yet visible on the surface. Then we plan according to depth:

  • Pigmentation protocol: regular sessions with peels and tone-evening actives
  • Carbon peel: support for superficial spots and pore concerns
  • Gold-needle RF: when texture or scarring accompanies pigmentation

The best time for pigmentation treatment is autumn and winter, when the sun is gentler. In summer the aim is to protect skin without darkening existing spots.

Patience and consistency

Spots form over years, and fading takes a few months. With regular care and daily sun protection, progress can be tracked by eye and on the analyser. Book an analysis to see where your skin stands.

Frequently asked questions

Do sun spots fade on their own?

New, superficial spots can fade with sun protection; established spots usually need regular treatment.

Can pigmentation be treated in summer?

Some gentle protocols work in summer, but intensive treatment is better suited to autumn and winter.

Which SPF should I use?

In Alanya we recommend broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day. For pigment-prone skin, tinted sunscreens with iron oxides also protect against visible light.
